Ascension (Onions)

Tu m’enveloppes et je te contiens
Fonderie Darling, Montreal, Canada
Curated by: Milly-Alexandra Dery

Bemis Center for the Arts, Omaha, USA (excerpt)

Composed of 700 ceramic onion petals, this installation was suspended onto the light and volume of the Darling Foundry’s architectural space arising from and asking for a contemplative experience. The onions are offered as a meditation on time and to all those things that have escaped the archive.

“Inspired by the spirit and ethos of the Darling Foundary’s Great Hall, Sameer Farooq was interested in the successive layers built into the space, a former metal foundry active from the beginning of the century then left abandoned for more than ten years at the turn of the 1980s. It was by meditating on the volumes of space and on the image of a container to be filled that he cast seven hundred onion-shaped ceramics tinted with black stain. Emerging from slow, meditative clay-work, these fossilized, petrified, onion petals invite a contemplative experience, part of a broader desire to question the way museum institutions collect. Farooq proposes a collecting process that evokes an inner archeology.”
